What is Group Certificate/Payment Summary?

It is the document your employer will provide you at the end of the financial year that has all the information needed for lodging your tax refund. Such document should have the accumulated amounts for both your gross income and your PAYG tax. Each of the employers for whom you have worked during the financial year (July 1st to June 30th) must supply you with a Group Certificate or Payment Summary. It is important to ensure each of these documents has both your Tax File Number and your employer’s ABN stated somewhere.

In case I have not yet received my Group Certificate from one of my employers, would I be able to use my last payslip instead?

In order to lodge your tax return at the end of the financial year (June 30th) you must have your Group Certificate/Payment Summary on hands. However, in case you are leaving Australia prior to the end of the financial year, you may use your last payslip – given that such contains the accumulated amounts for both your gross income and PAYG tax (YTD – year to date).

When can I apply for my tax refund?

Lodgements of tax returns are usually done after the end of the financial year (June 30th).Nevertheless, provided that you are no longer working and is about to leave Australia, you may apply for your tax refund at anytime.

How long will it take for me to get my tax refund?

How much will I get back on my tax refund?

Your refund will depend on your gross income for the year and on how much tax has been deducted from your periodic payments. Other personal matters may also have an effect on your refund. Thus, the best advice would be to

Am I able to apply for my tax refund while I am still working?

In case you are leaving Australia prior to the end of the financial year, you will need to have stopped working before lodging your tax return. That is because you will need to show the total for both your income and tax collected during this financial year.

My employer has refused to issue my Payment Summary. What should I do?

Under the Tax Law your employer is required to supply you with a payment summary after the end of the financial year. Usually, companies will issue the document to all employees until the 14th of July. However, depending on the level of efficiency of their payroll departments, some companies may delay the delivery of payment summaries for a few extra days. Nevertheless, in case your employer still refuses to provide you with your payment summary, we may be able to help you assemble the information required to proceed with your lodgement.

What is superannuation?

Superannuation (Super) is your retirement planning fund in Australia. Your employer is obliged to contribute with the amount equivalent to 9% of your gross income into your Australian superannuation account.

What is Super Refund?

Super refund is the reimbursement process of your existing available balance with your(s) superannuation fund(s), which may vary due to its origins and calculations being financial based. Subsequent to your definite departure from Australia, you may be able to recover up to 70% of such balance.

How long will take me to get my super refund?

Once all necessary documents have been received it will take approximately 6 weeks. Although, you must remember that your process will only commence after you have left Australia.
